The Sony PlayStation 2 Slim relies on a CMOS battery, essentially a modified battery designed to power the CMOS chip in the hardware. This chip is responsible for storing boot settings, system time, and date. A faulty CMOS battery can cause faults in game saves, incorrect system time, or prevent the system from powering up.

Tools: Metal Spudger; Phillips #1 Screwdriver

Parts: CMOS battery

Step 1
[step 1 photo] [step 1 photo]
• Remove all five screws on the downside of the PS2 Slimline
    • NOTE: Underneath the "Do not remove" sticker, there will be one last screw

Step 2 :: Remove the plate
[step 2 photo] [step 2 photo]
• Using a metal spudger, carefully pry open the chassis
    • NOTE: Although a metal spudger is used in the tutorial, it is recommended to use plastic spudgers with most electronics as metal on metal can short circuts

Step 3 :: Remove the Battery
[step 3 photo] [step 3 photo] [step 3 photo]
• Locate the battery on the motherboard. The battery will be a CR2032 Button Cell Battery
• Carefully use a metal spudger to pull the battery out of the metal housing
• Once the battery is fully removed, remove the connector upwards from the motherboard
    • NOTE: The connector does not have any clips and can be easily removed and pushed back in with reassembly/disassembly

Conclusion
To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
