The FTP

SettingValue
Hostftp.byterot.net
Port21
Modepassive (PASV)
Encryptionoptional: plain FTP or explicit TLS (AUTH TLS)

Any FTP client from the last 30 years will do: FileZilla, lftp, WinSCP, CuteFTP, WS_FTP, or plain old ftp from a DOS prompt. Use passive mode.

Once you're in, type SITE HELP (in FileZilla: Server menu, Enter custom command) for the site commands, and SITE RULES before you upload anything.

Getting an account

Accounts are free.

  1. Connect to irc.fxnet.org (port 6697 with SSL, or 6667 plain) and join #retro.
  2. Register and identify your nick with NickServ.
  3. Type !req in the channel. The bot sends your login details in a private message.

Lost your password? Type !newpass. Want your stats? !myaccount.

IRC

Everything happens in #retro on irc.fxnet.org: new uploads are announced there as they land, and !help lists what the bot can do. Try !search monkey island or !new GAMES.

PortUse it with
6697SSL/TLS: any modern client (HexChat, irssi, WeeChat, mIRC 7+)
6667plain text: period clients that predate modern SSL, like mIRC 5.x, ircII, Netscape Chat or Ircle on a classic Mac
/server irc.fxnet.org 6697 (SSL)
/server irc.fxnet.org 6667 (plain, for old machines)
/join #retro

Plain-text IRC isn't encrypted, so don't identify to NickServ with a password you use anywhere else from an old box.

Uploading

Make a directory for your release in the right section and platform, like /DRIVERS/WIN9X/Creative Sound Blaster AWE64 Drivers v4.36, and upload into it. Not sure where it goes? Use /INCOMING and staff will file it. Disk images and a FILE_ID.DIZ make everybody happy.
